Brief profile of Prof. Dr. Bishal Nath Upreti
Prof. B.N. Upreti is a geologist by profession and has MSc. and PhD. Degrees in Geology from India. During his 35 years of service in Tribhuvan University, He taught geology and also served as a Head of Department of Geology at Kirtipur and Tri-Chandra Campuses, and also held the position of the Dean of Institute of Science and Technology. After retirement, he was appointment as a Full Professor of Geology by The University of Zambia, Lusaka where he taught geology for nearly five years, and also served there as a Head of the Department of Geology and a Member of the University Senate. He is a Fellow of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and The Fellow and Council Member (2016-2022) of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
During his nearly 46 years of professional career, Prof. Upreti has done extensive geological research in the Nepal Himalaya and authored and Edited many books and published over 85 research papers in national and international journals. Prof. Upreti was invited as a visiting professor in the universities and Institutes of China, France, Germany, India. Japan, Ethiopia and Zambia. He was an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. In addition, he has attended, chaired and delivered keynote and invited lectures in many internal seminars and conferences. Prof. Upreti was the President of Nepal Geologic Society.
Prof. Upreti was awarded with many prestigious international and national awards. He was awarded with the C.N. R. Rao Prize for Scientific Research by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy and Honorary Fellowship of the Geological Society of America, Honorary Fellow of the Nepal Geological Society and Suprabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu. He is a recipient of the Australian Leadership Award Fellowship to attend a course on disaster management. He also attended the 30th Regional Disaster Management Course (DMC-30) organized by the Asian Disaster preparedness Center (ADPC), Thailand. Prof. Upreti’s main research interests are in structural geology and tectonics, Engineering geology, paleoseismology, geohazards and disaster management.
Prof. Upreti was the lead national expert/actor in International documentary films “Geologic Journey II, Collision zone: Asia (55 min) (2010) of CBC/National Geographic Channel Intl’/Discovery Science/CMF/CAVCO/OMDC and also in NHK (National Television Company), Japan produced documentary film series (60 min) “Miracle planet” on the theme Origin of the Himalaya (1985).
Prof. Upreti was the founding General Secretary, Vice-President, and the current President of Nepal Centre for Disaster Management (NCDM). He also served as the President of Disaster Preparedness Network-Nepal, (DPNet-Nepal), a network of NGOS, INGOs, Government departments and international agencies working in the field of disaster risk reduction. Prof. Upreti is not only an internationally well-known Himalayan geologist, but also a leading disaster management expert in Nepal.
