Brief profile of Mr. Laxman Upreti
Executive Member, NCDM
Mr. Upreti is a Journalist by profession who started his career in Nepal Television in 1985 since the time of its founding. He also has 20 years of experience as a news correspondent for NHK TV Japan from Nepal. He has coordinated many International TVs and Radios for their news, features and program production. He is a media trainer and involved in different media organizations. Mr. Upreti was the four-time president of Nepal forum of Environmental Journalist (NEFEJ) and Radio Sagarmatha (The first community Radio in South Asia), and the general secretary of Nepal Press Institute NPI. He was the Executive member of Antenna Foundation Nepal and Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) Nepal. He is also one of the promoters of Sikchyak (Teacher) monthly magazine to promote the public education in the country.
Mr. Upreti has extensively worked in the fields of Environment and Climate Change and related issues. He has coordinated different programs and projects concerning climate change-LAPA (Local Adaptation Plan of Action) implementation with Nepal Climate Change Support Program (NCCSP) and “Reporting Climate Change” Support to mountain initiative of Government of Nepal. He was also the media coordinator of mountain initiative Conference and Nepal Development Forum (NDF) organize by Nepal Government. He has coordinated with USAID funded PANI program as a team leader during project formulation and implementation period from NEFEJ side and Strategic Partnership Program (SP Program) with Free Press Unlimited, The Netherlands. Along with that, he has produced many reports and documentaries concerning development, social inclusion, environment, climate change and disasters. He was also closely involved in the Bagmati Cleaning Campaign, the longest ever-voluntary initiative and was the producer for the weekly TV program related to the same issue which is also available in YouTube channel entitled “Bijog Bagmati”.
Mr. Upreti is a founder member and the current Executive Member of Nepal Center for Disaster Management (NCDM). He has been closely involved in disaster reporting and program production since the 1993 water induced disasters in Nepal and continues to actively participate in the lobbying and advocacy of DRRM issues. In line with this, he is also a coauthor of the National Survey on “Impact of COVID-19 on journalism in Nepal” a joint initiative by Nepal Press Institute (NPI) and Bournemouth University (BU), UK.
